Who is responsible for traffic enforcement on Ascension Parish
roads? Below is an email response from
Troop A with the answers.
I have highlighted in red a part of R. Wayne Ryland's response which should
be a major concern of all in Ascension Parish.

Sir:
Could you please tell me what is the Louisiana State Police' position towards
the enforcement of traffic laws on state roads within Ascension Parish?
Is it supposed to be a joint effort between state and parish law enforcement?
The responsibility of the state police exclusively?
The responsibility of local law enforcement exclusively?
Whether or not you are aware, there have been 114 traffic deaths on Ascension
Parish roads from 1995 through 2000. And I believe that a majority of these
deaths could have been eliminated if we had better traffic law enforcement.
I look forward to your answer.

Subject: Ascension Parish Road Traffic Enforcement
Mr. Le Mieux,
A copy of your e-mail concerning traffic enforcement in Ascension Parish
was forwarded to me. Ascension Parish is one of nine parishes located in
the Troop "A" area. The Louisiana State Police has primary enforcement and
crash investigation responsibilities on all state and U. S. highways. Our
mission is to ensure the safety and security of the people in the state
through enforcement, education, and providing of other public safety
services.
The City Police Departments are responsible for their cities, the Sheriff's
Departments are responsible for their parishes, and the State Police has
concurrent jurisdiction with these agencies on state and U.S. highways.
Ascension and Livingston Parishes lead the Troop A area
in traffic
fatalities. The most common factor in the majority of these crashes
are
alcohol use and/or non seat belt use. We continue to address these
violations with increased enforcement patrols.
With the combined efforts of all law enforcement and the motoring public in
Ascension Parish, we can make our roads more safe.
