February 6, 2004 Jeff Wiley Dear Sir: For the fourth year in a row you are the recipient of my Inside Ascension Parish Web Sites Incompetence Awards. As you are aware, another twenty-one souls have lost their lives on Ascension Parish roads in 2003 and our crime rate is, in my opinion, out of control. All this leads me to believe that your organization with all of its modern up to date equipment, and what seems to be a limitless budget, is failing the residents of this parish with the duties you were sworn to uphold. The awards this year were delayed while the new Ascension Parish Government administration was put in place and their email addresses created. Hopefully this new administration will have more influence on you and convince you that much more can be done by your organization to reduce the deaths and crime in our parish.
Dear Mr. LeMieux
A major portion of my campaign was devoted to the
improvement of the roads in ascension parish. We have so many problem roads
in this parish that I could go on forever. I want to make a difference but the
only way to do that is through public pressure. We must make the Department of
transportation accountable to the people of this state. It is time for them to
eliminate waste and start spending our tax dollars on our roads. There will
be a public hearing on February 12, 2004 at he State Capitol for the roads in
our highway district. The meeting is open for public comment. If you would like
more information please contact me.
Rep Eddie
Lambert
Mr Lambert,
Thank you for your reply. Hopefully you will stand true to your word and get
results. But please do not put the crime issue on the back burner either. This
has been and will continue to be a real problem as long as our law enforcement
in this parish has, in my opinion, a lackadaisical attitude towards crime.
I
will in the next few weeks formally request from the sheriff the 2003
statistics for violent crime in the parish and the percentage of convictions
for those particular crimes. If, and that's a big if in this parish when it
comes to sheriff Wiley, he makes them public I'm sure you will see the
emphasis on crime prevention in this parish is sorely lacking.
My reasoning for the crime issue comes from the fact that I see the transfer
of parish inmates into the state prison system every Monday and Tuesday
fifty-two weeks a year and the percentage of inmates from Ascension parish is
very small.
Also with regards to our roads issue you may want look up the following web
site for the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission
http://lhsc.lsu.edu/. It is where I get statistics posted on my web site
and may help in the upcoming public hearing.
Sheriff Wiley was quick to reply about the email sent to Rep Lambert with regards to violent crimes pointing out the fact that his organization was not responsible for convicting law breakers but in fact that was the responsibility of the district attorney. Below is my reply to sheriff Wiley. Please excuse the mistake. The line should have
read arrests and convictions. I do believe that arrests are your responsibility. |
