Dear Chuck;
As I read across your many complaints concerning the traffic along Hwy 928
(Bluff Road) as well as other intersections, I've decided to throw in a few
words for MY point of view.
I drive daily from Baton Rouge to Hunt Correctional Center (on Hwy 74) and have
seen many 'things' which could cause traffic accidents. From the minute I turn
on to Bluff Road at Hwy 427 until I make it to work, it's a never ending story
of cars passing cars in curves, in blind spots an even with approaching traffic.
There are three 'main' places where 'people just don't seem to care'. The first
one is where C Braud intersects Bluff Road. Many many times as I approach C
Braud I flash my head lights at the traffic there so they will see me. That
doesn't bother them though, because they go ahead and pull out onto Bluff Road
to the left. I've had to slow down fast, even skid my tires a couple of times to
keep from hitting them.
The next 'spot' is where Bluff intersects Hwy 74. People in front of me don't
even stop at the stop sign. They just pull out onto Hwy 74 in front of the
oncoming traffic. I've seen many 'close calls' there.
>From that point, we go to 'spot' number three which is the turn off at
>3115. It's like NASCAR racing from Bluff Road to Hwy 3115. Everybody is
>jockeying for position to see who's going to be the first one to make
>the turn there. It's a 'total mad house' and no body seems to care. In
>fact, in the sixteen years I've made that trip, I've only seen Law
>Enforcement once along these streches. That's when a car tried to
>'extend' 3115 by not stopping at Hwy 74 and going on across into the
>bushes on the North side of Highway. I have, however, seen Police at
>radar traps just off of Hwy 427 (on Bluff Road) but never toward the
>intersections mentioned above.
Now you've heard my side of the story. Hopefully some body can do something
about this before a person gets killed or injured.

Boudreaux Road. (Most all roads in East Ascension area)
My nephew Brian Withers GOD REST HIS SOUL was killed on Boudreaux Road on May
21, 2000 and my husband was badly injured with the loss of use to his right arm.
The driver of the car has suffered tremendously for this accident as well. Some
want to assume and blame it on alcohol, but alcohol was not the cause... the
road was.
I want to thank Mr. Le Mieux for all of his time and effort that he has put
forth to help ALL residents of Ascension Parish (by writing letters and
contacting government officials, the media, and all who should be doing there
part to change this parish). I will forward his website to my friends in
Ascension parish to help get the word out that something needs to be done (to
these roads) and done before another life is lost or maimed! God Bless!

Mr. Lemieux, I agree with the things you are complaining
about. Especially the lack of law enforcement in the area. At any given time
you may see alot or a few police cars around the parish but seldom are they
ENFORCING the law. I have been told by people to get out there and do something
about the things I want changed and like you, most everyone I speak to turns the
other way. I feel that most parish government officials go to work to get a
paycheck, not to help the citizens. I appreciate your effort in trying to
change things and remember one person CAN make a difference.

Why don't you stop complaining about everything and try to work with officials
to change it? You are doing no one any amount of good by sitting here and
complaining. Those who aren't working towards a solution are only part of the
problem if there really is one. You don't like the way the Sheriff's Office
works, then you try being a deputy and having to put up with other "loyal
citizens" with the views that you hold now. You don't like the way the
School Board is run, why not attend a meeting or write a letter to someone who
can make a difference. Do your self a favor and try to fix things, or better
yet, do Ascenion Parish a favor and move out.

Ms. Landry,
Try to work with officials to accomplish something?
Take a look at the Our Roads Page and check out just how many roads have been
made safer by my efforts.
Drive around the parish and take notice of the new road signs and painted lines
to insure residents safety on our sub standard roads.
Take a look at the other pages on my site and read the kudos given by residents
and officials alike.
Check out the site in a few weeks after I take the school board to court for
health and safety issues and hopefully you'll see a positive verdict from the
courts.
Check with Channel 2 about the the piece they did last summer on Ascension
Parish Roads thanks to my site.
Keep an eye on the news papers as you'll soon see a law suit filed against the
sheriff dept. for with holding evidence and negligence in the investigation of a
death.
All and all Ms. Landry you have no idea what your talking about. Let me know if
you need help removing your foot from your mouth, or maybe helping load the
moving van if you decide to leave the parish. As you definitely don't seem to be
very concerned about parish problems.

Nice website, good luck with it. Interesting issue re Highway 74. Tricky one,
since it's a major, heavily traveled intersection. What we *really* need are
left turn lanes at the intersection of Hwy 74 and Hwy 73. People might not feel
the need to speed through there if they felt they could get THROUGH that
intersection fairly quickly once they get to it. I know, it sounds contradictory
to say that they speed up to get to a place at which they then have to SIT for
ages and ages. But who said logic was involved <g> Good luck with your
campaign!

I agree with reducing the speed limit on Hwy 74 from Sno's to the Bluff Road. I
live near Z's and the speed is bad and there should be NO passing from Sno's to
the Bluff Road. There are too many businesses and side roads coming onto Hwy 74.
Has a study ever been made on this situation? Thanks for you work on this
problem and let me know if I can help.

Hi Chuck,
First, please if you respond to this, send it to the tina@jongries.com e-mail
address. I only use the Yahoo account when I'm away from my home computer. I can
receive my regular e-mail, but must use this one to send anything back :-)
I don't mind if you use my comments, as long as I know ahead of time in what way
you plan to use them (for instance, I wouldn't want to show up quoted on the
news or in the newspaper without being aware of it in advance).
I found out about your website from the Advocate Online column "Around
Ascension" - there was a link to your site and a small write-up about your
efforts regarding Highway 74. I just clicked on the link from there to visit
your site.
I agree with you that people travel too fast on Highway 74 (and also on Highway
73). The problem is that's a high-volume traffic area, since the I-10
entrance/exit ramps are nearby, and the school is there, and the chemical plants
are down the road, etc. The population has exploded out there in recent years,
and the addition of the new high school is only going to make things worse. It's
nearly impossible to get through the Hwy 74/73 intersection at peak traffic time
in the morning and evening (even during the summer when there's no school
traffic).
Another congestion problem nearby is the I-10 exit ramp on Hwy. 73. If you're
making a right turn onto Highway 73, you have to wait through NUMEROUS light
cycles at peak traffic time, because 99% of the traffic is turning left, and
there's only one lane. If you try to get past all the left-turning traffic by
driving along the side of the exit ramp, you'll likely get a ticket. I've solved
the problem by getting off I-10 at Highland, taking Old Perkins, then Bluff to
Hwy 74 (I live on Dutchtown Lane off of Hwy 74). It's a long way to go around,
but I avoid two badly congested intersections so that's how I get home from work
every day.
I definitely think that road improvements have not kept up with the population
explosion in the area. But since I work in Baton Rouge and my children are both
grown and out of school now, I'll probably solve all those problems by moving to
Baton Rouge in the near future. I'm tired of fighting all the traffic problems
just trying to get to work everyday and back home!

I totally agree with your statements relative to the deplorable road conditions
in Ascension Parish. As A resident in Prairieville, close to Hwy. 42 and 73, I
cant tell you how many sirens I hear weekly headed to yet another accident on
Hwy. 42. How many more families will have to suffer the loss of a loved one
before the authorities WAKE UP ? One would think that one of the fastest growing
Parishes would be on top of this. Maybe if they have to feel the gut wrenching
loss of one of their own children, then they just might get the message. I also
lost a daughter in 1971. It wasn't due to an automobile accident, but the pain
is still there and I can relate to your loss. This statement has helped me
through the last 28 years: "YOU MAY NEVER GET OVER IT, BUT YOU WILL GET
THROUGH IT". Keep up the pursuit and know that you are not alone in your
grief or efforts.
By the way, I just happened onto your Web site while reading The Advocate on

Hi Mr. Chuck,
Visited your site again, good work on site.
Just an update on the striping of roads, we have just ordered a new striping
machine to help us assist on that matter.
Also as you know Mr. Buster Brown has left and you still have on your site.
Also the approval to widen and putting turn lanes (on St. Landry Rd.)on the
last meeting was done by the council and I made a statment on record that I was
not in agreement that this was done thru the prority process. And myself and DPW
Director, Bill Roux, did not approve of this as a top prority. We have much more
serious road problems ,like LA73 & LA74 intersection, LA42, LA621, LA431,
Roddy Rd.,Cannon Rd., LA73, Swamp Rd., Black Bayou, and many, many ,many more.
But this project, St. Landry Rd.,was on the master road list to do in our
Ascension 2020 (which council still has not seen).
I am committed to proceed with the master road plan, But I have to continue
to try to work with the Council for the people's sake. I LOVE Ascension Parish,
but I will not let politics hold us as hostages. I know I want to work with the
Council, but do they really want to work with me. The Question is still out for
an Answer, But I must rise above this and continue on.
This is very helpful for the people to have a way to exprees themselves. Keep
up the work and if we can be assist together on something, again please call.

As an attorney, I represent people injured on our highways. In particular, I
recently obtained a judgment in Ascension Parish against La DOTD and Ormet
Primary Aluminum Corporation for a one-vehicle accident on Highway 44 (River
Road). It is apparent that the State and Governor Foster believe that every
accident is the sole fault of the driver. The legislature is passing laws that
protect the State for bad roads, when you or I would be held liable under the
same circumstances.
I'm certain that you are aware of the death trap represented by the
intersection of Highway 931 and Hwy. 431. The State has been on notice of that
intersection of years. In fact, our law firm obtained a judgment against DOTD
for an accident that occurred there in 1995-1996.

Braud Road. Speeding is horrible early in the mornings from 6:30 to 9:00 and the
afternoons from 2:30 to 6:00. Maybe twice the sheriffs department has sent
someone out. They sit in the church parking lot at about 11:30 am for about
twent to thirty minutes then leave. This is the wrong time . Is it going to take
one of the many kids waiting for the school bus in the early morning hours or
getting off the bus in the afternoon to get hurt or possibly killed before the
sheriffs office does something about this. This road is too narrow for speeding
cars to try to hurry and pass a school bus because they are in a hurry to get
somewhere. Yesterday, a young boy on a Ninja motorcycle passed as we were
outside popping wheelies as he was going down the road doing a least 60 mph in a
35 mph zone. Something needs to be done NOW!!

*****************************************************************************I
would like to accept your offer to express my views concerning the performance
of the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office in relation to traffic enforcement.
Since I have been employed by the Sheriff’s Office as a computer analyst for the
past 3+ years, my views are based upon personal experience. I could use this opportunity to relay many positive stories
that friends and citizens of this parish have shared with me.
These would be based on their “observations” concerning the job Sheriff
Wiley is doing. However, since I am
a computer analyst, rather than expressing myself with vague generalities based
on personal observations I would prefer to look at something much more tangible
- the facts.
Ascension Parish currently has a population of
approximately 75,000 people and has a large industrial base.
This creates a large traffic flow each and every day.
Additionally, it is a rural parish covering approximately 350 square
miles. Your opening statement of
the Sheriff’s Department page implies that the Sheriff’s Department should
stop/ticket every driver who chooses to run a red light in the parish.
This strikes me as an unrealistic expectation.
My older brother is a avid fisherman and one of his favorite sayings is
that “when you go fishing, you can’t catch all the fish”.
I think this lesson holds true for law enforcement as well as bass
fishing.
You specifically mentioned highways 74, 73, 42, and 30 as
problem areas. As I am sure you are
aware, these are all state highways. As
such, the Louisiana State Police is the primary law enforcement agency
responsible for traffic enforcement on these highways.
However, the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office takes an active roll in
both policing and patrolling these highways.
Please allow me to share some statistical comparisons for
two years - 1995, the year before Sheriff Wiley took office and last year, 1999.
In 1995 the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office did not have a traffic
division. Today they have an eight-man motorcycle division devoted
exclusively to traffic control and enforcement. The following statistics compare the number of traffic
tickets issued in Ascension Parish for the years 1995 and 1999.

NOTE:
Above statistics do not include the 298 warning tickets issued by the
Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office in 1999, warning tickets were never issued
prior to 1996.
According to numbers from the Louisiana Highway Safety
Commission and the Louisiana State Police in just a two year span from 1995 to
1997 Ascension Parish had a decrease of 38% in fatal crashes and a 50% decrease
in alcohol related fatal crashes. In
fact, Sheriff Wiley was so successful in the reduction of fatal crashes that the
Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Department’s 1999 grant application to the
Louisiana Highway Safety Commission was not renewed. This prompted Mr. James E. Champagne, the executive director
and governor’s highway safety representative for the Louisiana Department of
Public Safety and Corrections, to write in a letter to Sheriff Wiley,
“Ascension
Parish has successfully reduced fatal and injury traffic crashes to a point that
Ascension Parish is no longer identified as over represented in the state fatal
and injury crash problem identification…….It seems ironic that doing an
outstanding job results in less funding…….Thanks for helping us meet our
goal of making the highways of Louisiana safer.”
Even without this additional funding Sheriff Wiley has continued to
move these numbers in the right direction.
A comparison of 1995 with 1999 shows a 58% decrease in fatal
crashes and a 64% decrease in alcohol related fatal crashes.
With such impressive results it should be of little
surprise that this year at the National Sheriff’s Convention Sheriff Wiley was
a runner-up for the prestigious J.
Stannard Baker Award for Highway Safety (one of only four selected
nationally).
As you can see these facts speak volumes. Under
the guidance of Sheriff Wiley, the APSO has made great strides forward in
enforcing the traffic laws. And
most importantly, it will continue to do so.

A response
August 20, 2000
Again thank you
for your feedback about my views concerning the Ascension Parish Sheriff
Department, and other law enforcement agencies in Ascension Parish with
regards to traffic violations.
Sadly your
feedback seems to imply hurt feelings about my views of your employer rather
than a sincere concern for the 100+ souls lost on Ascension Parish roads in
the past six years
Your statistics
look quite impressive when viewed from a certain perspective. But, any
increase in a number that is practically zero creates an impressive statistic.
Finally let me
remind you that most if not all the 100+ lost souls I make reference to have
died while your Mr. Wiley has been in office. So, I would hazard a guess that
your impressive statistics are really not all that impressive.
My suggestion
would be that instead of juggling numbers Mr. Wiley, and the other law
enforcement agencies, should be making every effort to juggling personnel and
other equipment towards traffic control.
To give you an
idea as to where this extra personnel and equipment could be found let me
share the following observations.
On Friday, August
18th, I pulled into the Exxon station on Highway 73. There I observed two
sheriff vehicles. The deputies for those vehicles were buying slurpies. After
purchasing their slurpies they went back to their vehicles, drove to the back
of the station, parked, and slurped their slurpies for about 30 minutes while
vehicles passing in front of the station passed at excessive speeds. The
questions to ask here are, were they on a legitimate break? If so why not one
at a time leaving one on duty? If not on a legitimate break what can be done
to effectively use the resources you have available?
Or. how about 3
motorcycles, one sheriff cruiser, and one radar gun, on one road, all parked
together checking for speeders?
Hopefully the
next set of statistics I see from you will show a dramatic drop in the number
of people losing their lives on Ascension Parish roads.

Mr. Le Mieux
I could not be more dissatisfied with the Ascension Parish Sheriff Dept. Over a
period of 13 months my sister and mother have filed over 26 reports on my
sisters ex boyfriend for harressment, destruction of property, breaking into my
sisters house. Once I had to drive from my house in Biloxi,Miss. because he had
came to her house and refused to leave and the Ascension Parish deputies just
droped him off at the end of her street and said they could not arrest him until
they saw him do something, so I had to stay with her the nite because she was
afraid for her life. The deputies told me that they would make rounds down her
street that nite to keep an eye on things. Within 6hours that nite only one
patrol car came pass her house. They Finally arrested him after a year of this,
but it took my sister getting struck in the face by him and losing sight in one
of her eyes and a friend of hers getting cut by him. To top all of this off the
Sheriff Dept was told to notify her when he gets out on bond. Needless to say he
has been out on bond for 2weeks and she was never notified. This should have
never gone this far. I grew up in Ascension Parish and I use to think I would
return one day. But know I am tring to get my mother and sister out of
Ascension.

I feel that the "file" part of the Gonzales Police Dept. rank and file, are some
of the most dedicated officers on the face of the earth. I feel that they are
stiffiled by the politics of some of the "rank". To many people are forced to
work in a "fear based job, ratrher than a goal driven profession". With an
attitude that "If you do not like it, people are waiting in line for your

SchoolUniforms:
Enter any further comments and suggestions you may have here
I only have one child left in Public School system in Ascension and in high
school is not required to wear the uniform. We have lived in other areas of the
state and did wear uniforms. I found it to be cheaper for the families, (there
were several places assistance in purchasing the uniforms were provided.) I
think uniforms provide an espirit de corp and the children don't have to play
the materialism game of wearing only the "coolest" clothes.
I found your web site via the Advocate and appreciate your efforts, but you
pushed a button, when you start to "demand" some government agency
compensate you for uniforms purchased. Did they sit in the closet? Was their no
utility value in them at all? I don't mind holding their feet to the fire for
the use of our tax dollars, but please don't sound like a whiny child.

I just found your website and I was surprised. I lost my 17yr old son this
summer in a traffic accident. Although his wreck was not here, he was in Memphis
at the time, I know the pain you feel for a lost child. My son was my joy and
its hard to keep going. I pray you have peace.
I too have had issues with our President and council. I am a RN and did hours of
research on junk cars parked on lots close to were others live and found that
its more dangerous then you can imagine not to mention the eye sore in our
parish. I presented this information to the council July '06 and have been blown
off everytime I try to get someone to make an ordinance against junk cars in
front yards.
I am hoping that new faces will bring new results but I have to keep in mind
this is the ''good ole boy'' state and we will have to see where our president
and council side.

Mr. Lemieux,
First of all thank you for your very
informative site. Your site is better than the local newspaper to get
information concerning our Parish President Ronnie Hughes. I find it VERY
STRANGE!!!!! that the local newspaper has NOT published anything
concerning the latest Ronnie Hughes blunder. My motto for the coming
election for Parish President in Ascension Parish is " A vote AGAINST
Ronnie Hughes is a vote FOR Ascension Parish".
Keep up the good work.
Regards, Peggy Mayers

I found your website by pure accident. I am finally releived to know that I am
not the only one disgusted with how things are going in our parish. I felt like
it was just me. Our complaints are falling on deaf ears. I'm beginning to think
that the only way we'll be able to get anything done is go straight to the media
and show them the REAL Ascension Parish.

I noticed you awarded the citizens of Ascension Parish! Such irony as they are
the ones who "elect" the so-called incompetence award recipients. These citizens
elect these officials either through participation or non-participation of
voting. The citizens are not deserving of such an award due to their lack of
voting interest.

Hello Chuck. I finally got here (to your site). I looked at everything you had
on it. I feel that I just have to say something about what you've done with the
'sit' as well as with your CAUSE.
The workmanship is just beautiful. Anyone can tell that a lot of time, thought
and effort has been put to this. Although I see you every day, I was never
knowledgable of your situation. I was also very sorry to read the details. I am
also in agreement with the comments concerning the speed at which people travel
on Hwy 74. I drive that way ever morning going to work. People puul out in front
of me all the time on Bluff Road, also turning off of Hwy 3115. A person counld
get hurt.
See you at work...Keep up the good work.

Dear Chuck
I just happened upon your little site here and have spent the last hour reading
your
comments bashing the law enforcement in Ascension Parish. I moved to this parish
approximately 3 years ago from E.B.R. parish, and wouldn't go back for anything.
I disagree with you on just about everything you have said about the Sheriff's
Dept.,
no make that everything you said about it. I see that you are one of these
people who
have nothing better to do than ride around looking for things to complain about.
In regards to your comment about the lack of traffic enforcement in our parish,
I
personally have seen the S.O. motorcycles running radar on several occasions,
even on C. Braud Rd. And yes there was about 2 or 3 of them there each time,
but have you taken the time to think why that is? Of course not! Well
allow me to give you my oppinion: SAFETY. Don't you think it's safer for the
officer if they have more than 1 out at a time stopping total strangers. But in
my opinion
you really don't care about their safety or what they do for you day after day.
I would
be willing to bet that you are one of these people who complain about speeders,
but you
probably break the laws yourself.
I don't know if you have had the chance to catch the news lately, but there were
several hundred police officers who gave their lives on 9-11-01 in the attempt
to
save the lives of total strangers. So why don't you take a moment to think about
who might one day give his or her own life to save yours, it will probably be
one
of those "Keystone Cops" that you spoke about. So the next time you see one of
these men or women in a store, instead of timing their break why don't you thank
them for putting their life on the line for us.
Now I would like to make my suggestion to you Mr Le Mieux. If this Parish is
that bad,
why don't you pack your S@$# and move. And it also wouldn't hurt if you might
find
the time to get a life somewhere along the way.
