I would like a copy of any data you may have describing the number of citations issued so far by the Ascension Parish litter officers.

In advance thank you.

A response to this request from the Parish President suggested that I contact Justice of the Peace Mr. Dean Smith.

Mr. Smiths answer was the program had just been put into effect, and at this time no citations had been issued nor had any violators been brought before him for sentencing.

Some time has now passed since the implementation of the litter patrol.
I would appreciate your sending me the total of citations issued and judgments issued against those cited.
In advance thank you.

There have been 2 litter courts thus far. At the June Court, there were 3 cases and in July there are 5.

This does not in my opinion justify either the financial outlay nor the hype given this project.
Might I ask just how much finances were appropriated to this project?
Might I also ask the penalties issued to the luck eight that so far been brought before this litter court?
In advance thank you.

To my knowledge, there are no additional expenses incurred, as the deputies, constables and justices of the peace have been, and are already in place.
This serves merely as a venue to assist in the collection of these litter violations, which have not been collected in the past, and in turn, compensates the parish for what we are mandated to pay regarding the salaries of Constables and Justices of the Peace. I hope this allows a clearer picture of the reasoning behind this program.

Harold,
It has been quite some time since the litter patrol was put into operation. Since that time I have not seen any significant results from this project.

If you would please advise on what if anything has been significantly accomplished. If not what might be done to put it on track or maybe it would be a good idea to scrap the project for lack of interest.

Hi Chuck,

Good hearing from you, and I hope your family is doing fine?

I have noticed that you have not seen any improvements as of yet. But, I must say this is a very large Parish, approximately 300 square miles, 94,000 acres and about 750 miles of roads and about the same in ditches. There are almost 80,000 people and it is hard to see it all. But, to help answer you concerns, We have run at least three articles in the paper and send out different public announcements. We have had 4 Litter Courts and wrote 15 citations and had at least three people assigned to pick up litter. In fact they were in our area two weeks ago. We have increased the public meeting and started a Litter Awareness Campaign and increased the Trash Bash committee by two members.

Our Keep Ascension Beautiful Committee has just announced a NEW Recycling Campaign which will start at Dutchtown 8th grade before the end of the year and planned to be put in at least 7 other schools to help teach the children about recycling. We are in the process of hiring another litter officer by the first of the year. The Justice of the Peace and Constables are giving of their time on their own to assist the people of proper hearings. If fact the State and Local Prisoners have also increased their efforts to help keep Ascension clearer. Just a lot of Land to clean up and a lot of people still LITTER.

We have just ordered 250 Large Litter signs and will be starting to post them in the next 30 to 40 days. We have also increased the communication and assistance from the Jail crews to help pick the trash. I have personally attended meetings with the Recreational Groups and the Sportsman's Leagues and spoke to them of our efforts of cleaning up the Parish better.

You know Chuck, it takes a lot of time and a lot of money to produce a little. And a lot of folks are trying very hard to accomplish the goal and objectives we put in front of us. Yes, We could just say our efforts are going unnoticed. BUT, I am convinced that it takes a while to see the impact and I am NOT JUST READY to give up. I started this JOB and I maybe the ONLY ONE left. BUT, I plan on attempting to finish it. We all need to spread the WORD ......."KEEP ASCENSION BEAUTIFUL"

Now, I think we have done a lot and gone a little way .........but if WE (YOU and I) pull together maybe other people will not give up either. This is OUR parish and it is up to US to keep it CLEAR...........Remember ...DON'T QUIT.......

See you soon and have a nice Day

Harold,
Thanks for the update. Your response has been added to the topic of the litter patrol on the Parish President Page of my web.
From your description and with a little public relations your efforts just may pay off. Hopefully they will.
Every morning at the prison I see your parish van loading inmates to pick up litter. I even get to talk to a few and you'd be very surprised as to some of the things they find on the side of the road.
Again thanks.

Chuck

According to the Advocate there have been 23 cases heard by the night court, collected $995 in fines and assessed $1,500 in judgments. This to my way of thinking is too little in the six months this program has been in effect.
