September 19, 2000 Ms. Cathy Merideth Dear Madam: I have today read your Plan For Excessive Heat and find it to be completely unsatisfactory. I would have liked to have seen a plan that required the school to stand down from any physical activity at any facility on the school grounds when a temperature with a heat index in excess of 85 degrees Fahrenheit was present. This, in my opinion, would have been the type of remedy that would come from an educated person rather than passing the buck to the parent. I am sure that there are other activities, other than physical, that the PE teachers could come up with on days that exceeded a set temperature. I have this day started authoring my petition for civil suit against the Ascension Parish School Board to require that the school board be bound to just such a maximum temperature limit. I will wait until September 25, 2000 before filing this petition to allow you time to reconsider your plan and come up with a solution that will insure that no student be subjected to inhuman temperatures either in a gym or any other facility in any school within the parish. I am available week day evenings from approximately 4:30 PM until 9:00 PM, and on weekends just about any time morning till evening if you or your attorneys would like to discuss this issue. Hopefully you will reconsider and save yourself and the school board expense and embarrassment. Sincerely, Chuck Le Mieux Cc/Fax to: Cc/email to: A copy of this letter has been published to the web site In Ascension Parish at http://inascension.com |
