Subject: Ascension Parish School Uniform Survey

This reply is to answer the question you had concerning the school uniform survey.   At the time of the April 1999 survey, there was 10,808 students registered in the system (kindergarten through 8th grade),  Each student was given a survey to bring home.  Of the 10,808 surveys given out, 5,839 were returned, roughly 54%.  If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Mr. Lemieux,

I am sending you the information you requested.  These figures are ones that personally calculated, and not of the Ascension Parish School Board.

Of  the  5839 parents who replied to survey----Yes - 73%    No - 27%
Primary Level  (K-5) 3312 replies            Yes-2548-77%     No-764-23%
Elementary (K-8) 1064 replies         Yes-760-71%       No-304-29%
Middle (6-8)  1463 replies                Yes-974-67%      No-489-33%
Of the 5839 responses  -----57% were from the primary level
18% were from the elementary level
25% were from the middle school level

I hope this information will be helpful.

My Personal feelings
I thank Ms. Russo for her response. But, I do not feel responses received was a sufficient sampling of the community to facilitate the requirement for school uniforms. I will be looking into options we parents have to reverse the school uniform ruling and require the parish to compensate parents for the cost of the uniforms already purchased. If you or some one you know has information on options available to us to reverse the school uniform ruling, or if you agree or disagree with my feelings on the subject please contact me via email.

It seems as if your edict requiring school uniforms is an on again off again situation at the Dutchtown Schools. Since it’s implementation there has been two or three instances where school uniforms have not been required.

It was my understanding that a dress code would reduce certain problems within the schools concerning student’s safety and disciplinary problems. Evidently the principals at these schools are clairvoyant and know that on certain days none of the problems that brought forth the requirement for school uniforms will happen. Why else would they authorize school uniforms not be required for a particular day?

As usual it seems as if the school board has no conception as to what is actually going on, or control over responsibilities within their jurisdiction. Lets make the school uniform requirement an all or nothing proposition. Preferably nothing.
