The Council

Ascension Parish government only works for us part time!. It's time our elected officials making up the parish council be required to work for us full time or step aside for those who will. The every day duties of parish government can no longer be handled after work and on week ends. To send an email to the Ascension Parish President asking for full time council members click here.

I just found your website and I was surprised. I lost my 17yr old son this summer in a traffic accident. Although his wreck was not here, he was in Memphis at the time, I know the pain you feel for a lost child. My son was my joy and its hard to keep going. I pray you have peace.

I too have had issues with our President and council. I am a RN and did hours of research on junk cars parked on lots close to were others live and found that its more dangerous then you can imagine not to mention the eye sore in our parish. I presented this information to the council July '06 and have been blown off everytime I try to get someone to make an ordinance against junk cars in front yards.

I am hoping that new faces will bring new results but I have to keep in mind this is the ''good ole boy'' state and we will have to see where our president and council side.

Subject: FW: Allied Waste vs. Acadian Waste

I believe this is something that needs to be addressed.

I switched over from Allied to Acadian when they jacked their quarterly rate to $85.

Now Acadian has raised my rate from $57 to $60 and this parish resident claims a rate increase to $72.

According to Mr. Schexnaydre this was brought up in committe and "a majority did not want to get into garbage business".

What is wrong with you people? Your supposed to be looking out for the people of the parish yet you allow trash companies to raise their rates willy nilly without even batting an eyebrow.

It's time for all of you to start putting us first and forget your personal agendas and your constant bickering will never get anything accomplished.

I might also point out this is an election year and from my own personal polls find that your past performances and antics are not appreciated and many are looking to change.

Acadian Waste has jacked their price up to where it is now $72/quarter compared to Allied Waste at $73/quarter.
At least in my neighborhood, Acadian picks up 2X/week whereas Allied is only 1 but Allied does give you the hugh blue garbage can.

My parents live in Baton Rouge and pay $46.50/quarter for Allied Waste.  EBR did a deal for all residents so they can get a much lower price than we can going to Allied or Acadian by ourselves.

Why doesn't Ascension Parish go to the 2 companies and say who wants the AP business and whoever bids lowest gets it?

Mr. Schexnayder,

I send this to everyone concerned as you can see from the cc To:

It also lets you know that your constituents, (if the road is in your jurisdiction), are not satisfied with the way the Parish is being run.

In this case it is not in your jurisdiction, but mark my words that in the future one road or more will be.

I couldn’t agree more. Since it is a farm and market road, which means it doesn’t qualify for any federal highway dollars, the state is telling us that they don’t have the money to repair it. Representative Mert Smiley is diligently working on this matter as we speak, and it is in his district. He is circulating a petition in an effort to get some state dollars. I understand he is also trying to get it accepted into the federal highway commission road system. Any help you can offer will be appreciated. I’m forwarding this message to the Ascension Parish Leadership Council so they know of your concerns. Mert is a member of that group as one of our state legislators.

Additionally, we are discussing road improvements with the developers proposing Keystone of Galvez as part of their infrastructure impact fee. We will see how this develops. Thanks for your comments.

Best Regards,
Ronnie Hughes, President
Ascension Parish Government

Mr. LeMieux,

Since this is a State Road and not a Parish Road, I was curious as to why you are sending us the email. The state reps or senators that actually can do something about this and are responsible for this road should be the ones you deal with. We know about it and complain about the state roads all the time and get little in return. I would love for you to ride to my district and travel over hwy 44 from the interstate to the river and tell me what road in the parish is worse than it and is a greater hazard. For 6 years now, we have been promised the road to be improved. Now, the last statement is they will let for bids next fall. I will fall off my rocker if it is bid then. I’ve heard that every year now for the last 6. Then you can take the bridge road Hwy 70 from D’ville to Sorrento and see the back up for a mile every afternoon when they can simply put a turning lane on 70 and 22. Yes, it is very frustrating and nobody takes any blame. The whole system is wacko. Until it is changed, we will get little or nothing. I do know that we have reps in state gov’t now that are trying to change things. Hopefully they can and soon. Ascension Parish needs it.

Thanks,
kents

Some of our parish council have been members long enough to either be directly or indirectly responsible for the decay of seventy-five percent of our roads into the sub standard condition they are now in.

Evidently the parish council has no idea of the definition of the word PRIORITY. If they did, then they wouldn't have approved a $365,000 repaving and widening of St. Landry Road, which IS NOT on the parishes PRIORITY list of roads for repair to bring them up to safe standards. It's your money folks, and sad to say your council.

Cancellation of the information meeting held the last Thursday of the month, implemented to bring parish residents and council members together to resolve problems has been scraped. This further reinforces my belief that our part time parish council needs to be removed and replaced with full time qualified representatives. And the sooner the better!
